Foreign investment in U.S. farmland on the rise

Over the past decade, foreign companies have been investing in agricultural land in the United States at a record pace, according to a Midwest Center for Investigative Reporting analysis of USDA data. The data was compiled from 1900 to 2014 under the Agricultural Foreign Investment Disclosure Act (AFIDA).

Advanced biofuels face uncertain future

The delay in proposed renewable fuel minimums by the Environmental Protection Agency may have hindered the future of advanced biofuels, the kind of cellulosic ethanol formulas made from tall grasses and stalks. Although researchers tout advanced biofuels' environmental benefits, the uncertain policy has caused some in the agriculture industry to shy away from them.

Monsanto’s Climate Corporation using big data to inform farmers

Monsanto is predominately in the seed business, but the St. Louis-based company has dabbled in the data business, as well. Its Climate Corporation allows farmers to use cell phones and laptops to analyze hyper-local weather data and monitor weather trends. Farmers say the improved data service has helped become more efficient in a changing climate.
