College students with depression often run into more difficulties than the typical student. Those who struggle the most with this often invisible disease often don’t connect with the help they need.

“I had been through mental health treatment several times and it felt very empty, like there was no one who was going to help me. I had been on eight different medications. The day that I did try to commit suicide, I had been to the psychiatrist and it felt like, just pure emptiness. ‘If they can’t help me, I don’t know who will,’” said Jordon Deutmeyer, a student at the University of Northern Iowa.

Deutmeyer said progress can be made when universities focus on and accommodate students’ individual learning styles and thought processes.
