The Iowa Center for Public Affairs Journalism-IowaWatch, has three members participating in this week’s UI Summer Journalism Workshops for High School Students.
David Schwartz, who is president of the IowaWatch board of directors, is the director of the four-day camp, which started Sunday, July 24, and runs through July 28, at the Pomerantz Center.
Laura Arny, an IowaWatch reporter and lead web manager, is serving as counselor and student mentor.
And Stephen J. Berry, IowaWatch’s interim executive director-editor, is one of the speakers. His talk is about the ways that journalism can change the world.
“I will take any opportunity to talk about journalism,” said Berry, who is also an associate professor of journalism at The University of Iowa, “especially when the opportunity to is talk about journalism to young students.”
Schwartz is also executive director of the Iowa High School Press Association.
The camp offers workshop courses in an array of areas throughout the journalism field.
These areas include editing, publication design, adventure journalism and reporting — Berry’s specialty.
“As a journalism professor and as the editor of iowawatch.org, I believe that I can draw on my 40 years of professional experience to teach these students something valuable about the important role that journalism can play in society,” Berry said.
The Iowa Center for Public Affairs Journalism-IowaWatch, is an independent, nonpartisan news service incorporated as a non-profit in Iowa in February 2010.
