IowaWatch summer intern Katelynn McCollough has been selected to be the next editor in chief of the Iowa State Daily, and IowaWatch staffer Linh Ta has been selected to be the executive editor of the Northern Iowan newspaper.

Both will serve in the top executive roles at the Iowa State University and University of Northern Iowa student newspapers, respectively, for the 2013-14 school year.

Ta has been an IowaWatch staffer since January. She is the non-profit news organization’s first UNI student reporter. McCollough has accepted a position as summer 2013 intern for IowaWatch. Both work at the newspapers they will be asked to lead next year.

IowaWatch is part of the Iowa Center for Public Affairs Journalism, a non-profit, independent organization that produces investigative and public affairs journalism, fosters collaborations with other news media, and trains students interested in this kind of long-form, in-depth journalism and who want their work published. The Center was founded by Stephen Berry, a UI associate professor of journalism and mass communication and Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist who also serves as an adviser and board member for the Center, and Robert Gutsche Jr., a UI doctoral graduate.

IowaWatch’s main newsroom is in Iowa City but student journalists from several universities and colleges in Iowa participate in its reporting projects.
