If you missed a chance to attend the Webinar offered by the Midwest Center for Investigative Reporting on covering agribusiness on Sept. 18, 2013, it can still be viewed along with its resources at http://www.newsu.org/courses/agribusiness-reporting.

The Webinar links to resources at http://www.newsu.org/resources/sri/covering-agribusiness.

Brant Houston, board member of the center and the Knight Chair in Investigative Reporting at the University of Illinois, led the Webinar, which included more than 35 PowerPoint slides on finding documents and people for stories. The Webinar also had information about coming up with story ideas in any area.

The Webinar was conducted with the Poynter Institute in St. Petersburg, Fla., as part of the Specialized Reporting Institute, which was held earlier this year through the support of the Robert R. McCormick Foundation in Chicago.

The Ethics and Excellence in Journalism Foundation in Oklahoma City also supported the Specialized Reporting Institute workshop, as did Investigative Reporters and Editors – which did computer-assisted reporting sessions.

More than two dozen journalists from throughout the United States gathered in Champaign, Ill., for the workshop.

Sessions were led by agribusiness experts from Midwest universities and by top reporters in the field. Their handouts can be reviewed at https://investigatemidwest.org/2013/06/03/agribusiness-workshop-kicks-off-this-week/.

Topics included biofuels, food safety, crop insurance and immigration.
