The Iowa legislature is back in session. We’ll talk with lawmakers from both parties, from around the state, about their priorities for this year’s session, and hear from analysts about what they expect.

“The top item on my agenda, and I think almost everyone’s agenda is pretty much the same, is getting out of there with a balanced budget; not to do any harm really,” said State Sen. Bill Dotzler, D-Waterloo.

Dotzler said historic tax cuts enacted two years ago mean the budget will be tight.

Proposals for a gas tax to support infrastructure projects, cutting funding to two state mental health institutes and expanding medical marijuana laws are three issues exciting discussion this session.
