“At the time, the newspaper industry was doing less and less investigative journalism, so there was obviously a gap that needed to be filled there,” said Steve Berry, co-founder of IowaWatch and University of Iowa journalism professor, of the inspiration for creating IowaWatch. “And the second thing was strictly my role as an educator and teaching my students in an investigative journalism class, I discovered that there was a lot of good reporting coming out of my classes and there was really no reliable way to get their work published.”
“Five years in, I would say IowaWatch has exceeded my expectations,” Berry said.
