You can find adventure just about anywhere, from exploring your own neighborhood to getting lost in the wilderness. IowaWatch.org will celebrate adventures big and small in a virtual storytelling event via Zoom webinar Friday, November 12, at 7 p.m.
Iowans Lisa Rossi, Chuy Renteria, and John Richard will share true stories of adventures from their lives. Rossi, a former Des Moines Register journalist and IowaWatch board member, will tell about embarking on a new adventure in stand-up comedy. Renteria, who recently released his memoir, “We Heard It When We Were Young,” will share his adventures growing up in West Liberty. Richard, a documentary filmmaker, will share his harrowing tale of being trapped in the Andes of Argentina.
The event will feature emcee Charity Nebbe of Iowa Public Radio as well as an online silent auction. It is being organized by members of a University of Iowa Event Management Workshop course.
Evalyn Harper, a member of the student planning team, said she’s inspired by IowaWatch’s mission.
“Journalism is such an important form of storytelling, and IowaWatch does so much to support that in our community. I’m excited to support them, and hear some awesome adventure stories at the same time, all from the comfort of my own home,” she said.
IowaWatch is a nonprofit organization dedicated to producing and encouraging explanatory and investigative journalism in Iowa, engaging in collaborative reporting efforts with Iowa news organizations, and educating journalism students in the community. In an era of profound social and political change, the importance of quality, unbiased journalism cannot be understated, IowaWatch leaders said.
Tickets for this event are available by freewill donation here.
All donations from individuals to IowaWatch, including event ticket donations, from Nov. 1 to Dec. 31 will be doubled thanks to the NewsMatch fundraising program supporting independent news organizations.
“This will be a great and comfortable event. I am grateful to the students and the UI event management program for this,” said IowaWatch editor Suzanne Behnke. “I love the theme of ‘adventure’ as we’ve all been on personal adventures, especially in the last few years. Even better, any donation for a ticket will be doubled if purchased after Nov. 1.”
