Each year on April 22, the world celebrates Earth Day and shows global support for environmental protection.

Below is a Storify-curated list of articles from the Midwest Center for Investigative Reporting that highlight important environmental issues. Work from Harvest Public Media, The Wisconsin Center for Investigative Journalism and The Iowa Center for Public Affairs Journalism is also included.

Scroll through the list to read more about topics ranging from water pollution to climate change and the emergence of genetically modified organisms.

Organizers first celebrated Earth Day in 1970.

The annual event is spearheaded by the Earth Day Network.
