Household incomes where 7 of the top 10 Iowa Lottery retailers exist are below the state median. What impact does that have, especially on whether people get treatment for gambling addiction?
Frances Siddique, co-owner of Jim’s Foods in Cedar Rapids, said she sells lottery tickets as a service to customers and a way to draw in shoppers.
“It’s not as if you make money off of it, but people are going to come in and buy something and buy a lottery ticket, so it drives business,” Siddique said.
She said occasionally playing the lottery is fine and she’ll sometimes buy a ticket herself, but added, “I generally tend to stay away from it because I think it’s a fools game.”
